As you may have noticed, there has been a surge of Indigo hand-dyed pillow covers that have come on the scene. Mud cloth's long history starts in the 12th century in Mali, where it was invented. The cotton cloth is made by artisans who weave strips of cloth together and hand-spin and weave the fabric, and then dye it several times with mud and natural dyes like indigo (hence the name Mud cloth). After the cloth is dyed, the vivid patterns are painted with bleach or soap.
The beautiful patterns are usually crafted by hand and each one is unique with shades of blue that will vary from piece to piece. These fabrics will age with time, which adds to the character of the cloth.

二回目となる本日のテーマは「染め布」。日本語に直訳した”泥染め布”というタイトルを聞いて驚かれた方もいるかもしれません。ですが、近年のインテリア業界が熱視線を送るブレイク中のアイテムなんです。特にソファなどに置くクッションカバーとして人気が集まっています。
このユニークな名前の布地の生まれは西アメリカのマリ。その起源は12世紀頃にまでさかのぼり、地方や民族ごとに西アフリカ全土で様々な布地が作られてきました。その中でもマリで伝統的に用いられてきた染料がインディゴと泥。
それぞれの制作方法は、
① 職人が綿繊維を手で紡ぎ合わせた布地を織る
②（インディゴ染）インディゴ草をすり潰した藍の浸出液を作る
（泥染）樹木などから抽出した染料に何度か浸ける
③（インディゴ染）染めたくない部分を糸で縛り染料に浸ける
（泥染）乾燥後、特製の泥をつけた筆で模様を描き、乾燥。その後、再び液に浸ける
④（インディゴ染）糸で縛った部分が染色されずに残り、文様になる
（泥染）色を落としたい部分に漂白剤を塗り、石鹸で洗うと白い文様が残る
使い続けるうちに自然な風合いが生まれ、一つ一つ違う味が出てくるのも染め布の魅力の一つ。
装飾的でリズミカルな文様には、それぞれ意味があるそうでとても興味深いです。
