常夏の楽園「ハワイ」と言えば美しい海や砂浜、椰子の木などを想像する方が多いかと思います。
しかし、ダイヤモンドヘッドのほど近くの海を臨む絶好のロケーションに
まばゆいばかりのイスラム美術装飾で施されたお屋敷がひっそりと建っているのをご存知ですか？
ハワイにいることを忘れてしまいそうなこの魅惑の迷宮「シャングリ・ラ」を今回はご紹介します。

What reminds you when you think about the islands of Hawaii?
Paradise, beautiful beaches, seashores, palm trees...these sure represent the best of the taste of Hawaii.
However, we will take you to the lesser-known place on the foot of Diamond Head called "Shangri La" today,
a lavish residence fully decorated with gorgeous Islamic art.
インドのムガル庭園を模した美しい庭やパティオ、細密金細工が施された天井、鮮やかなイラン陶器、スペインやインドの金属工芸や織物など、中東諸国から集められた家具や装飾品およそ2500点のイスラム美術品を擁するこの建物は、
1936年に建設が始まった巨大プロジェクト。
とあるアメリカ人の富豪夫妻が、
イスラム圏を周遊した新婚旅行の最後に訪れたハワイでその美しさに感動し滞在中に5エーカーの土地を購入。
避寒の別荘として、イスラム美術にインスパイアされた邸宅を構える決意をしたことに端を発します。
This dream-like residence is a home of as many as 2,500 artifacts including gilt and painted ceilings from Morocco, vivid ceramics from Iran, painted wooden interiors from Syria, pierced metalwork and textiles from Spain to India, and has been here since 1936.
It all started in a project which a wealthy American couple fell in love with both intricate Islamic art and the beauty of Hawaii after touring around the world for their honeymoon. The couple purchased the 5-acre property in Hawaii before going back to NY and decided to build a house inspired and decorated by Islamic artworks.
建設主の名はドリス・ドューク（Doris Duke 1912-1993）。
NYのたばこ商の元に一人娘として生まれたドリスは、
1925年の父の死に伴い、莫大な遺産を相続します。
成人すると、歴史保存、環境保全、野生動物保護など興味ある様々な分野に遺産の富を使い、慈善活動やチャリティー活動に奉仕するようになります。
22歳で独立支援団体を組織し、女性や子どもの福祉や教育、メンタルヘルスなどにも力を入れました。
The owner of this mansion is Doris Duke (1912-1993), an only daughter of a billionaire businessman in NY and inherited enormous amount of her father's assets when he died in 1925. After coming of age, she contributed to some philanthropic activities spending her father's heritage, which comes in a wide range of fields such as historical observation, environmental protection, wild animal rescue, education for women and children, mental health etc.
1935年に外交官のJames H.R. Cromwellと結婚。
ハネムーンの地として訪れた中東諸国の中でも、特にインドのタージマハルやイスラム美術特有の文様タイルなどに深く魅了されたドリスは、旅の道中から少しずつ置物や絨毯、金属工芸品など美術品を収集。
そして前述のとおり、最後の訪問地としてハワイに向かい、ほどなくして「シャングリ・ラ」建設がスタートしました。
She married to an American diplomat James H.R. Cromwell in 1935, and they embarked on a honeymoon around the the countries in the Middle East. Doris was so gravitating towards unique and exquisite Islamic geometric patterns that started collecting some objects along the way throughout the trip. Then, the last destination of Hawaii also gave them a big inspiration to make them leave a history there.
イスラム美術に囲まれた邸宅「シャングリ・ラ（理想郷、の意）」を築く過程で、
ドリスがこだわったことの一つ。
それが、昔の美術品を収集するだけではなく、現地の職人たちに発注し、職人たちと一緒に一つ一つ装飾品を作り上げたこと。
ハネムーンの行く先々で現地の人々と交流し、その文化に触れたドリスはきっと、今を生きる職人たちの情熱や息遣いを感じられる作品をそばに置きたかったのでしょう。
彼らをはじめとする新旧の芸術家たちや建築士らの尽力により、
シャングリ・ラは1938年に完成しました。
The project "Shangri La" needed a massive work because they built it from its foundation. They hired professional architects, craftsmen, designers from around the globe and commissioned them to bring their best into this project.
Thanks to those skillful artisans' passionate work, Shangri La unveiled its ethnic beauty in 1938.
その後60年以上にわたり、収集を続けたドリスは肺水腫により1993年、80歳で死去。
ドリスの死後、建物や収蔵品はドリス・ドューク財団のもとでの所有管理が始まり、
2002年に一般公開が始まりました。
予約制ではありますが、どなたでも気軽に見学することが出来ます。

Doris cherished this place and kept increasing her collection until she died in 1993 at the age of 80.
After her death, all of the heritages in Shangri La has been managed by Doris Duke Foundation,
and started to be publicly open in 2002.
Although you need to make a reservation before visit,
Shangri La welcomes everyone to give us better understanding of Islamic art and the legacy of Doris Duke.
