Today, we will focus on her later life and how she started and built her career as an interior designer.

In the wake of the death of her father which brought her family a financial struggle,

Elsie started to work as a stage actress with a help of her business partner Marburry in 1891.

Her reputation as an actress was growing rapidly especially because of her taste for costumes and stage designs.

She is so passionate that she flew herself to France to seek for elegant couturier wardrobes from Paquin, Worth, etc.

After stepping down from the stage in 1905,

she had an opportunity to renovate her private house and accessorize its interior by herself.

It was brightly and lightly finished with rattan chairs, muslin curtains, tile floor, etc,

and it became a huge craze among the social guests who visited her place at that time.

The biggest breakthrough moment for her career is when she got commissioned to a social club in New York called "The Colony Club". Her client, The Colony Club, is the first social club that is designed for women-only and is a very private organization, and Elsie was in charge of decorating the interior of this entire building.

Instead of the men-only social clubs that were filed with dark-color furniture, Elsie's preference for lightness, softness, and elegance in interior decoration matched noble ladies' tastes perfectly, and they soon loved to spend their time especially in a cozy indoor garden room that Elsie designed.

The success in the Colony Club made her famous quickly, and she expanded her career not only in interior designing but also writing for columns magazines or giving speeches in public.

After making the name in the field, she even got to purchase the Trianon Villas in Versailles France for private use!

Elsie had the Villas nicely renovated and accessorized with pleasant furniture, and Coco Chanel and baroness Rothschild are believed to have joined fabulous parties at the Villas hosted by Elsie.

"Simplicity", "Lighteness", "Functional", "Visual unity".

Those are the key words that Elsie had cherished coherently in her career, and her feminine taste for interior decoration brought a complete new style in interior industry that had been mostly dominated by men occupation-wise.

In the early 20th century, women started to stand up to build a career and to live their own life, and Elsie de Wolfe sure became one of the figures that inspired many other women.
